On this tenth day of the tenth month, I’d like to celebrate my TENTH year of teaching tenth grade English!! I’m no math teacher, but I think my reflections below add up to ten!
3 Expectations I had coming in –
- endless resources
- perfect time management
- fidelity & integrity from all who surround me
3 Disappointments –
- focus on test prep
- heavy societal blame on teachers
- not enough hours in the day
3 Lessons I’ve Learned –
- kids will be kids will be kids, even at 15 and 16 years old; they’re still the best part of the work
- it’s okay to befriend colleagues
- adults are almost always the most burdensome part of the work
1 Gratitude –
- Thanks to my mami who never settles for less than excellence, I seek to hone my craft, to become better than the year before.
Ah, Britt, congratulations! Felices diez AÑOS! I love your ten reflections! Here’s to the next ten! Welcome back to this space.

Happy 10 years!!! I’ve also learned the same lessons. Granted I taught elementary & you’re secondary but I always love it when they want to be kids.
