SOLSC24 || 19: First job at Starbucks

Prompt: Write about the first job you ever had.

When I was in high school, I participated in that co-op class where I was at school half the day and then left around noon to go to work. This first real job of mine was at Starbucks! Yep, I wore the green apron for three years, and to this day, it is the best job I’ve ever had.

With my first big girl paycheck

What I miss –
•customers rolling their eyes at my over the top chipper attitude at 5 in the morning
•seeing a customer and making their drink before they even walked in
•the group of older gentlemen who gathered every single morning to chat while they drank their drip coffees
•not taking work home
•my “regulars”
-double tall latte
-grande matcha latte
-grande pike, one sweet n low *in British accent*
-black tea lemonade, sweetened
-doppio macchiato, two Splendas, extra hot nonfat milk, squirt of whipped cream
(Don’t ask me their names…)

What I learned –
•a local coffee shop can bring people together
•a kind word goes a long way
•wisdom abounds among morning coffee gatherings
•a strong work ethic

My own first day was at a chicken sandwich shop that was soon to close due to bankruptcy! And then, I went to work for Woolworths, which suffered the same fate~ SO, your stories of that first job bring memories but also a reminder that our first jobs are just one important step on the journey of life

I loved your list of what you miss. I have never worked in a coffee shop, but I have definitely observed many of the things on your list. And your learnings resonate.

Wow, Britt, I love that that young chipper teen could learn so many life lessons from this first job! Good for you. I love that you remember all those drinks! Yesterday, my husband was teasing me and left a big tip for the barista when after stumbling around with testing out other things on the menu, I finally asked for a London Fog latte, with oat milk and 0 pumps of Vanilla syrup, extra hot. It took me a while to try to explain what I wanted. The barista told him my order wasn’t as complicated as some! Baristas are the best!

I love your post about your first job. It brings back memories of mine! I don’t think I would say that my teenage job in the pizza and sandwich shop was my best job ever, but I did work with my two best friends, get free food, and never had to take work home with me, so perhaps I should rethink that!
