Slice of Friday Frozen Dinner and Potty Love Yous

Welp, it happened early this year; I missed writing yesterday. On the SIXTH day?

I’ve had high expectations for my comeback today, drafting in my brain all day long while I was with students in the library, while I was having a difficult conversation with a colleague, while I was singing my heart out in the car, while I was scolding my kid, while I was on the phone with my mom, while I was throwing together a ridiculous, unplanned, meet the need of each child’s taste of the day dinner, while…. Well, you get it. My post was going to be great. Creative. Unique. Out of the box. Pack a punch. Moving. Reflective.

And then I paused to take in the “slice” right in front of me. The 1 year old throwing pieces of his food to the floor in absolute delight. The 5 year old proclaiming “I THINK I HAVE TO POOP” mid waffle bite (yeah, a frozen waffle is part of that ridiculous dinner) and hightailing it to his bathroom. The 3 year old, per usual, quick to follow – “ME TOO! I’M GOING TO POOP!!!” making a mad dash to the guest toilet.

The 1 year old stared at me. I almost laughed. Instead I realized it would be a great 5-7 minute timeframe to type up one of those draft versions I’d thought of all day.

Suddenly, I heard my 5 year old’s voice sooner than I anticipated –
5yo: MOOOOOMMMMYYYYY!!!!!!!
Me: ….yes?
5yo: I LOVE YOU, CHICKEN!!!!
Me: I love you, too, babe! But…are you done yet?
5yo: No!! LOVE YOU!!!

And then, per usual, my 3 year old’s voice –
3yo: MOMMY???!!!!
Me: yes?
3yo: Come!!
Me: What’s up? You ready?
3yo: No, I’m not done. I LOVE YOU, CHICKEN BOOTY!
Me: Oh… Uh, hahaha. I love you, too, silly chicken.

5yo: BUT I LOVE YOU ONE TRILLION AND GILLION TIMES!!!!

This didn’t pack a punch, and I don’t have it in me to seek deeper meanings. I’m resigning to the possibility of sometimes having only tales of frozen food dinner and I love yous from the potty poopers to share here.

Motherhood in a nutshell. Today got away from me & instead of my planned Slice about my love for my local library I had to settle with a haiku. Besides we wouldn’t trade these moments for the world.

This is an awesome slice of your life as it is today: from the glorious slicing plans we all experience when we are too busy to actually write, to the chaos of getting children to eat, to the realities of motherhood with young children. I loved everything about the post!

I love this! The day of a busy mom! Somehow your posts aren’t updating on my blog roll, and I didn’t realize you were writing this month! I have some catching up to do!

This is spot on for a glimpse into the challenge of slicing and doing all. Of. The. Things. x 3 littles, so you’re good. And if you miss a day here and there, those I LOVE YOU CHICKEN are so worth it! All of those things you said you wanted to do with your post? You got it.
