Others Before Self

For his Kinder “Others Before Self” project, I rattled off the groups Elías could choose from: kids, elderly, environment, homeless, pets. He chose homeless. The next guiding question was to think about what we should do to help the selected group. I watched him through the rearview mirror.

“We can call *hand to ear* the construction workers to build houses for the homeless!”

“We can call the men who build cars to make cars for them!”

“OH!!! We can call people who have lots of money, rich people, to give their money to the homeless…and then don’t be rich anymore.”

Not bad to start thinking big first, before moving to personal level. It makes sense to ask from the ones who have resources and can help. Actually the big inquiry question is: how come during the times when some people buy super expensive artwork form auctions or own their own islands, that there are people who can not afford shelter nor food, how can the money distribution be so skewed.

Such a BIG question with such BIG answers that make us question the vast inequitable distribution of wealth and policies that allow the rich to grow richer and richer while so many struggle to put a roof over their heads. We all need to be more generous with our time and resources.

Your son is a big thinker. Those who have helping those who don’t have. If only the world worked this way. He is definitely growing into a compassionate young man and I am sure he has you and your husband to thank for this.
