In my NYT Morning News email yesterday, Susan Sontag’s list of likes and dislikes was linked, so I used it as my mentor text!
Things I like: milk chocolate KitKats, handwritten notes, The Oh Hellos, notebooks, Elizabeth Acevedo, bookstores, getting a Thai massage, the New York Times, coloring books, Wordle, hands, live readings, writing workshops, Canada Dry ginger ale, sour punch bites, caldo de pollo, setting my alarm clock, coffee, vodka cranberries, chips & queso, Julius Caesar, the number 9, picture books, laundry, reading captions, road trips.
Things I dislike: social media push notifications, crayons, staying in hotels, being in a reading rut, drivers who don’t use blinkers, scoring low on the NYT weekly news quiz, shopping, Ernest Hemingway, Romeo and Juliet, Adam Sandler, mint chocolate, goat hairs, heavy metal music, pink lemonade, wearing skirts, Houston’s humidity, clothes hangers, doing the dishes, chipped nail polish, traffic.
Great format – I’ll have to pull it out when I am in a rut. I can’t help but think there must be more of a story (or slice) behind why you dislike goat hairs. It is rare to come across them.
I am with you on the chipped nail polish, which leads me to look at my toes, and remind myself that yes it is time to get a new pedi.

Britt,
Great ide for a post. I’ll have to circle back around and read Sontag’s list. I concur w/ the likes but not all the dislikes I don’t like Adam Sandler either.

This was wonderful. I enjoyed reading your lists. Vodka cranberries? Crayons?

HAHA I don’t know why I can’t stand crayons; I much prefer colored pencils 😜 vodka cranberries….excellent beverage to order at the bar. 🤗

I love the specificity of your list and the idea that each item on it could inspire a slice. This format would be a great way to brainstorm writing ideas with kids.

It actually helped me for my own slice tomorrow, haha!

I also saw this in the NYT and added it to my potential “to-write” list! I love how you did it and I agree that there is so much to learn about someone by knowing their likes and dislikes!

I hope you write one, too – it was so fun!

Love this, Britt, although I was a bit surprised by some of your dislikes. Why can’t people use their turn signals anyway? Ugh!

This is a cool idea. Something fun for everyone to try. Plus I love, love, love a handwritten note.

I dislike drivers who pass you right before coming to an exit and then get off at that exit. This is a great format. With 12 days left to the challenge and ideas running low I will need to remember this and give it a try, Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes, can’t wait to read yours!!
Ugh yes, the people who do everything not to miss their exit – so dangerous!

Delighted I found this mentor slice through another slicer’s link. Awesome format that I need to save for a rainy day. The brevity of the format leads to careful word choice. A fun way to get to know a person.

I can’t wait to read yours if you decide to try it one day 😜

This is a great format. Part of it (likes) has a similar theme to the Ethical ELA’s , “Pile of Good things poem.” “The Canada Dry Ginger Ale…” I like it too.

Juliette, I posted my slice and then almost immediately after, opened the email with Ethical ELAs “Pile of Good Things” – I was stunned!!! Glad you noticed too!

The fact you listed that you don’t like crayons is hilarious. Both lists are fantastic. Agreed on the reading rut. That’s the worst!

It’s all about the colored pencils!! 😜

Another great slice idea, I do question a few things like why do you like the number 9 and doing laundry? Also I don’t know who Elizabeth Acevedo is!
