Slice of Life: What now?

I never thought I would participate – much less complete – a month long writing challenge shared with an actual audience of readers. Well, I blogged every single day in March and then “poemized” every single day in April. I am WIPED. In fact, when my husband asked what writing habit I was completing in May, I was bumbling and felt almost…lost?

Randomly, I applied for a scholarship spot in Susannah Conway’s Journal Love Club thinking I would try my luck, but feeling “certain” I would never actually hear back. Guess what?! I DID! Even though my husband and I both said, “that’s it? That’s the only commitment?,” it does feel scarier than one month because it is a one year – one WHOLE year – of responding to a daily journal prompt. Yikes!

Another goal I had for 2021 was to complete one book a month, and while I barely made it in March and April, my reading life was truly an afterthought both of those months. May sounds like a good time to lean deeply back into reading!

I have absolutely nothing cool or insightful or tender to share today, so here are five random thoughts:

1 – I’m scheduled to deliver my second son in twenty days (!!!)
2 – There are 13 school days left until I begin maternity leave
3 – I’m so, so excited my sister will be here soon from Hawaii to help us with the arrival of our extra human!
4 – I’m currently reading We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia
5 – I am truly having a notebook crisis: should I try using dot grid paper?! (There are blogs upon blogs and Youtube videos galore with comparisons and reviews for all types of paper… in case you were wondering)

Nothing cool or insightful! How is that writing opportunity NOT cool and insightful! Give yourself more credit. The journaling thing sounds AWESOME and I am so happy for you.

I have to agree — slicing and poeming took a lot out of me as well. I’m happy to make May the month I finally wrap up version 2.0 of my first novel. I’m looking forward to new projects myself this summer — including trying to read more.

The book club with TTW earlier this month reminded me how much I love book clubs and want to just chat endlessly with people about what I’m reading. I hope you’ll share some of your reads.

Also, take the plunge, try out dot paper for your notebook! It’s a risk but what’s life without a little variety?

Britt, for the life of me, I don’t know how moms do it, much less do it it well! I didn’t read all of them (wow, there were a lot of slicers this year!), but I have really enjoyed all of your work! A year-long challenge sounds daunting, at best, so good luck!

I’ve been enjoying the dot paper, and I splurged (it was a small splurge) on a fountain pen to go with it. I don’t really do lines that well (actually, my handwriting is atrocious . . . it’s a good thing I don’t teach it . . . wait, I do), so I like the freedom to write “on the lines” when I want to and to do my own thing when I don’t!

Let’s face it, having a newborn is no work so of course you will have lots of extra time on your hands to complete a year long challenge. With all that time I am sure you could get through two books a month. If course I am not being serious. I applaud you for the choices you made and I know you will succeed at all of them.

Brit, all we can do in life is just try. Some things will be great and others, not so much. I love Susannah Conway and use her photo walk ideas for inspiration. Enjoy!

Lol, I like your 5 random thoughts, because that reminds me of how my journal posts look like. They’re typically like ‘Nothing much happened today but here are some random happenings.’

    Thanks for sharing!
